What is Wellness Journalling?

The world can sometimes feel overwhelmingly stressful. Our lives are busier than ever, with global news and events constantly within reach, interrupting our daily routines each time we check our phones or open a laptop. Occasionally we can feel anxious, without even knowing what we’re actually worried about!

Wellness journalling is an incredibly useful tool which can help us to cope with feelings of stress and anxiety, boosting focus, productivity, and mood. It gives us an opportunity for self-reflection, cutting out external noise and providing clarity on the things that affect our day-to-day lives, this in-turn can help us to see things in context, making problems seem smaller and more manageable.

Find some time for you. When starting your wellness journey, identify (or create) a gap in your daily routine where you’ll be able to take some time with your journal for self-reflection. Most people like to do this first thing in the morning, or late in the evening. Ideally, you’ll be able to do this at roughly the same time each day, without being interrupted.

Create an atmosphere for self-reflection. Pick a cosy spot, light a scented candle, and make yourself a hot drink to settle down with.

Put your phone away. Wellness Journaling should be considered as an antidote to technology. The act of writing is proven to reduce stress hormones, increase dopamine and trigger a ‘flow state’, helping to centre yourself in the here and now. If your phone is within reach then you may find yourself distracted by thoughts of the outside world, or find yourself checking emails or scrolling through social media on autopilot!

Be creative. A wellness journal is a fantastic opportunity to be creative. If the mood takes you, journal your thoughts and feelings in the form of poetry, lyrics, or a stream of consciousness. You are the only person who will read your journal, so let your thoughts flow onto the page in whatever way feels right in the moment without fear of judgment.

Embrace the lows, as well as the highs. Be honest with yourself and journal any negative thoughts and feelings. Tracking them over time can help to identify potential triggers and mitigate them.
